planed top. All our tabletops are hand planed. This is how they were done in the 18th century. You may request that your tabletop be as smooth as possible. This we will do. Hand planing tears out the grain to some extent. This is part of the beauty of a surface that is hand planed. Please ask for what you want and understand we are goin gto hand plane your tabletop. |

You can choose cherry, tiger maple, walnut, or pine. Usually the type of wood doesn't effect the price.

Antiquing.
The combination of steps in the furniture finishing process that have
as their sole objective to make the furniture look older than it really
is. How much older is determined by the amount of antiquing applied.
We offer antiquing in light, medium and heavy quantities. First, try as we might to make perfect furniture with no blemishes, we can't. So, rather than promise you something that we can't do, we offer you the best that we can do. Second, scratches and dings will happen to your furniture as you use it. if we put the first few on, as others occur, there is less anxiety which is good for you and your visitors. Third, we think it looks more appropriate. It's like a person over forty-five having crows feet around their eyes.

Rule joint.
A joint used on drop leaves on a dining table. It takes its name from
a folding wooden ruler used by carpenters.

Finger joint. A drop leaf joint that allows a drop leaf to be raised up and lean against a wall as well as hang down in normal fashion. |

Random planked effect. |
| Varnish.
Better than lacquer, shellac, or linseed oil as a top coat. It does not allow water to penetrate into the wood and cause a white spot. We use two coats to be surer that we have the surface entirely covered. |
| Knee
space. The space at a dining table from the bottom of the apron to the floor. On our tables this is 24 1/2". If you are tall, we can cut the apron up another inch for you. There is no charge for us to do this for you. Another option is a table with a long overhang at the ends. Our 46 x 77 oval works very well for taller people. Call and discuss this with me, Jim. Occasionally we make a table 30" high. This can be done with some legs. Again, call me, Jim. |
| Hold
down blocks. These are blocks that we make that attach the tabletop to the apron. Solid wood tabletops expand and contract across the grain with humidity changes. Hold down blocks hold the tabletop and apron together while also allowing the tabletop to expand across the grain. |

| Hand rubbed
finish. After the final coat of flat varnish has been applied and allowed to cure or get hard, the surface is rubbed with 400 grit sandpaper. This removes the dust fleckles that fell into the varnish before it completely dried. It also softens the appearance and feel of the finish to a very desirable luster. It's a time consuming process but we feel that it's worth it. |
