Wonderful Windsors in Maine
On a hilly stretch of U.S. Route 1, six miles north of Maine's Camden Harbor, Jim and Nance Brown, owners of Windsor Chairmakers, craft furniture inspired by American antiques. If you poke your head into their factory- housed in a classic New England barn - you can watch as artisans transform wood into Windsor chairs, highboys, hutches, dining tables, sideboards, cabinets, and beds built to Jim's specifications.
Across the yard from the workshop, two 19th-century farmhouses have been joined together to serve as a showroom, where you are invited to roam through the room settings and imagine how the pieces might look in your home.
Seven days a week from June to October, and from Monday through Friday the rest of the year, Jim is on hand to answer questions and "talk Windsors" - form, finishes, technique, tiger maple, and the virtues of authenticity and comfort. You may not drive away from Windsor Chairmakers with a full set of side chairs in tow (though the temptation will be great), but you're guaranteed to continue on your tour of coastal Maine a little smarter and with a renewed appreciation for the value of handcraftsmanship and the simple elegance of Early American design.
